The FBI knew by the 1990s that there was a Soviet “mole.” In 2000, information from a Russian source helped them zero in on Robert Hanssen but the Bureau needed ironclad proof. Former FBI operative Eric O'Neill worked undercover as Hanssen’s aide and secretly acquired Hanssen's encrypted digital planner, "the smoking gun" needed to take down Hanssen.
