Book Specialist (Part-Time)

Summary

The International Spy Museum is hiring a Book Specialist to work in our Retail Store. The Book Specialist is a bookselling position with a high level of Customer engagement and interaction. In this role, the Book Specialist is responsible for receiving, replenishing, and merchandising our wide selection of Books. Works closely with the Book Buyer and oversees various administrative duties related to the department.

Five Areas of Accountability

  • Responsible for replenishment and merchandising of Books
  • Attend on and off-site book events
  • Assist guests on the sales floor
  • Assist with administrative duties for the department

Essential Responsibilities

  • Display exemplary customer service and history background to sell intelligence, espionage, and history related books and products. Assist customers in-person, over the phone, and via email with book recommendations and questions.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail to check-in and receive books through the POS operating system. Assist the Book Buyer and Finance Department in resolving any related discrepancies.
  • Merchandise and maintain book area and other displays. This includes cleaning, creating signs, cross merchandising in coordination with buyers and operations managers, and managing markdowns of damaged and/or slow selling merchandise in coordination with the Book Buyer.
  • Maintain a well-organized and clean stock area so that Sales Associates can locate back stock and assist with display maintenance to maximize sales.
  • Perform routine Cycle Counts and prepare and participate in annual Physical Inventory to accurately maintain stock levels.
  • Participate in the planning and execution of in-store and off-site book signings and events as required.
  • Partner with the Web and Buying team to add products to our website and write product descriptions as needed.
  • Perform other related duties and administrative responsibilities as needed or assigned.

Desired Qualifications

  • High School degree or equivalent. College degree or related college coursework in history, English, marketing, merchandising, and/or library science is preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a retail, book selling or library environment.
  • Proficient in Outlook, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Prior experience with a Retail POS system. Chaindrive and/or Shopify experience is a plus.
  • Superb communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to detail and a self-starter.
  • Ability to multi-task.

Special Considerations

  • This is a part-time hourly position and is scheduled between 18 and 30 hours per week. Some nights and weekends are required for special museum and off-site events. Required to work some holidays as dictated by the needs of the business.
  • The work requires extended periods of standing and walking, will require a moderate amount of bending, and the ability to pick up, carry, lift, and move stock weighing up to twenty pounds. Moving merchandise from other locations within the Museum using carts and dollies is required.
